Ultra High Relief Double Eagle

2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin
The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin was launched on January 22, 2009 as a digital recreation of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ original design for a 1907 ultra high relief coin. The design has been updated slightly from the original coin plasters to increase the number of stars on the obverse to fifty, indicate the current date in Roman Numerals, add the motto “In God We Trust” to the reverse, and add a small border to create a consistent edge for the coin.

I think St. Gaudens and his student Fraser are the best coin designers in US history. The original UHR and the HR $20 are spectacular coins. I like this coin but it is noticably smaller than the original and that takes away some of the overall appearance of the new coin. Overall the new coin is nice and the quality of the strike is excellent. I think it is worth owning. I question how valuable it will be in the future however.
Ratings:Same design as previous, the only thing actually going for this coin is the deep-draw or as they call it, high relief, And for those who dont have a prior eagle by Teddy Roosevelt they want too share in the beauty of the design (all-time best designed coin)with, the technology of the present. it will prove to be an exceptional coin and, who knows if the U.S. Mint will continue the coin or the process of ultra high relief.
Ratings:I got my UHR in the mail on the 9th of Feb. I love it so.
Ratings:It goes without saying that the St. Gaudens double eagle is the high water mark of U.S. coin designs, the standard by which all other designs are judged. Striking the coin in ultra high relief as originally intended only adds to the appeal. That said, the historical significance of this piece is questionable, as there is no readily apparent rationale - other than the Mint’s desire to make a profit - for issuing this coin now. Perhaps I would feel differently if the coin had been issued in 2007, that being the 100th anniversary of the original. Although I might well decide to add this coin to my collection based on the beauty of the design, I am do not believe that the coin has much investment potential given that the Mint has not thus far (to my knowledge) established any mintage limits for the piece.
Ratings:I would like to see the coin made in a larger size and of some alloy less than pure gold. Not all of us can afford the “real” thing - but I know that is part of the allure…
Ratings:I have waited a lifetime for this beautiful coin to be produced. I was happy with the Proof Gold Eagle. I am ectactic with the UHR!
Ratings:To reflect the current economical situation , which soon will be part of history , they should have put : “In gold we trust”
Ratings:I love the history, and can’t wait to see the real thing. It would have been even better witout adding “In God We Trust”, just because it would have been more historically correct and even better looking.
Ratings:Great looking coin from the photos, time will tell when the coin is in hand. Investment wise, a tose up, depends on how many the mint can produce this year.
Ratings:Beautifully done coin, and very popular design. The only future improvement suggestion I can think of would be to make a larger version for 2010, with the diameter of the original double eagles, by using 50% silver and 50% gold (or some other fraction of gold vs silver), like some of the Royal Canadian Mint coins.
