Mount Hood Quarter

The final release in the America the Beautiful Quarters series for the year 2010 will be the Mount Hood National Forest Quarter. This site was selected for the state of Oregon. The reverse design representing the forest shows Mount Hood in the background with Lost Lake in the foreground. This was designed by Phebe Hemphill. The obverse design features John Flanagan’s portrait of George Washington with details restored from the original 1932 Washington Quarter.

The depiction of Mount Hood itself is very striking. However, the lettering which is not raised, is very difficult to read. The actual impression one gets from the reverse of the coin is that it must be used at an arcade since it has such a cheap look. Sad.
Ratings:This coin has the correct dimensions. Since this quarter series focuses primarily on the “National Parks” and the park system I think a representation of Crater Lake National Park or Fort Clatsop National Memorial would have better represented the State of Oregon in this series.
