What does this say about Michigan? “Hey, we have geography!” A great design for a GREAT LAKES quarter, but not for the state of Michigan. The Great Lakes border eight states, not just yours.
Ratings:Unlike a lot of the other states whose coins tried to incorporate too many design themes, Michigan kept it simple with a clean design that really works well. The outline of the Great Lakes surrounding the State rendered to resemble a topographical map was a nicely done, as the eye focuses away from the outline of the state and turns to the lakes instead. The contrast between the textured state and the mirror-like fields of the lakes looks particularly nice on proof versions of the coin. And the state motto ties in perfectly with the theme.
