Van Buren’s Liberty $10 Gold

2008-W Martin Van Buren
The Martin Van Buren’s Liberty Gold Coin was the eighth release of the First Spouse Gold Coin Program. Martin Van Buren did not have a spouse while serving as the 8th President from 1837 to 1841. The obverse of the coin, which features the Liberty image from the Liberty Seated Dime, was originally designed by Christian Gobrecht. The reverse of the coin features a young Martin Van Buren reading a book under a tree. The reverse was designed by Thomas Cleveland and sculpted by Jim Licaretz.

Excellent design on this one. The back of the coin is a little busy. Great idea for the series, but these should have been made in silver instead of gold. Of course, I suppose the Mint didn’t count on the price of gold near $1000/oz when they started planning. Investment potential is long term until the price of the base metal stabilizes.
Ratings:This is a beautiful rendition of the sitting liberty. The details of the first spouse series are extremely detailed. Unfortunately, being a half ounce of pure gold, they are rather expensive and have not generated much interest since 2007. Will the low mintages of recent coins provide an opportunity for investment? Only time will tell.
Ratings:A great recreation of the Seated Liberty design. This is one of the best Spouse coins. Should have good investment potential in the years to come as more gold coins are sent to the melting pot.
Ratings:Outstanding designs both obverse and reverse. It’s gold so has to be a winner.
Ratings:In a unappreciated “First Spouse” series, this coin was a breath of fresh air. I think that it might just be a coin with hidden potential.
Ratings:I’ve always loved the seated liberty coin obverse design, and was excited to learn that this coin would revisit that design. Though I don’t think of Martin Van Buren as being a noteworthy president, I like this design, both the obverse and the reverse. It is probably my favorite, design-wise, of the 1st spouse coins so far, though I also like the Jackson liberty design.
