American Gold Eagle

2006 American Gold Eagle
The American Gold Eagle was first produced in 1986 as a 22 karat gold bullion coin. The coins have also been available in collectible proof versions and recently collectible uncirculated. Gold Eagles are minted in four weights: 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/10 ounce. The obverse design is based on Augustus Saint Gauden’s design for the $20 Gold Double Eagle minted from 1907-1933. The reverse design features a nest of American Eagles designed by Miley Busiek.

Certainly not equal to it’s earlier St.Gaudins Double Eagle design from which it was derived, nor is it as spectacular as the Gold Buffalo. Overall, it’s a nice design for a bullion series and not much more. In a hundred years, I’m sure some of the low mintage fractionals will be considered numismatically important.
Ratings:By far the nicest bullion coin in the world!
Ratings:Magnificent coin design here. Everything is proportioned in a way that gives this coin perfect eye appeal.
There is not a whole lot of historical significance behind this coin and it is more a bullion type coin than a commemorative.
In todays market these coins have very high investment potential with gold trading at around $985 an ounce. I would steer clear of buying directly from the mint as most of their gold coins carry very high premiums above the price of gold. If you want proof versions, buy them certified by NGC or PCGS as they could have a higher value numismatically even if gold slides back from its current price.
Overall I give this coin a 5!
Ratings:Great classic American obverse design. Reverse too much like a cartoon. Investment potential is strickly as bullion.
