American Gold Buffalo

2008-W American Gold Buffalo
The American Gold Buffalo was first produced in 2006 as the first 24 karat gold bullion coin produced by the United Staes Mint. Coins have been offered in collectible proof version. In 2008, Gold Buffalo coins were offered in collectible uncirculated versions and fractional weights. The design of the coin is based on James Earle Fraser’s design for the classic Indian Head or Buffalo Nickel.

Beautiful, classic design. Probably THE nicest bullion coin in the world. Proof versions have had comparatively low mintage, so it should have great investment potential long term.
Ratings:The one ounce uncirculated in hand is probably the nicest coin I have ever seen. Fantastic.
Ratings:A great design, but how about a little mor originality? CSI Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and West Point? I can buy a real nice UNC nickel for $40. Investment potential is good long term but, once again, too tied to the base metal at the present.
Ratings:I love the proof version of this coin. It is fantastic! I wish gold didn’t go up so much in 2008 so I could buy this coin. Just beautiful!!
Ratings:I think the Indian Head 5c is the classic coin of our time. It depicts 2 truly American icons as no other coin has. The gold Buffalo continues the tradition. I love this coin and the investment potential is just a bonus to owning such a classic beauty.
Ratings:Beautiful, simply beautiful! One of the all time great American coins in my opinion, with very scarce fractionals that have incredible investment potential. If you haven’t guessed, I love this short lived series, and sincerely wish that I could afford to own many of them!
Ratings:Yes, it lacks originality but it is such an American classic. I’m glad I got my first one directly from the Mint. Otherwise I would have wondered if it was counterfeit. I guess I just expected more from my first “pure” gold coin. But the more I would look at it the more it grew on me, the more everything stood out. I love this coin! I pick one up each year.
Interesting history behind the original designs of the coin… Fraser using three different Indians as models for the obverse, but no one can document who the third Indian was (Even Fraser couldn’t remember)… A buffalo named Black Diamond that lived at a New York zoo being used as the model for the reverse (He ended up in a butcher shop).
Investment-wise… it’s gold!… and my 2008 proof is doing quite well.
Ratings:Lack of Originality + Great historical design = Just O.K.
Ratings:Even more potential investment potential since US Mint stopped the unc’s
Ratings:A great classic American design. Good investment potential due to lower mintages than the AGE’s.
