Alabama Quarter

2003 Alabama Quarter
The Alabama State Quarter was released in 2003 as the twenty second coin of the 50 State Quarters Program. The obverse of the coin was designed by William Cousins after John Flanagan. The reverse of the coin was designed by Norman E. Nemeth. The reverse design features Helen Keller with a pine branch and magnolias to each side. Her name is written in Braille, although its size is too small to be readable by touch.

Alabama could have put many different things on their quarter, but I’d expect most of those things to reinforce the stereotype of rednecks and the Confederacy. Thankfully they depicted Helen Keller instead, a woman who reminds us not to judge a book by its cover.
