  1. Overall, rather disappointing, on a historically significant coin such as this. Abraham Lincoln is so important to American history and once again the U.S. Mint faltered in what should have become a classic U.S. coin. That said, it still will hold a place in numismatic history, and I’m sure, a honored place in most collections.

  2. 2/25/09 received my order from the Mint.

Pre-release renderings by the Mint led me not to expect much, but I was pleasantly surprised on receiving my coins. The portrait of Lincoln gives the man his due, achieving an inspirational quality. I had that little “wow” when I got my first look. And despite the outsized ears and the prominent mole, the design is one of the most flattering protraits of Lincoln I’ve ever seen.

Lincocln was, after all, physically an ugly man, as many contemporaries observed, and as Lincoln himself remarked upon often. I’m sure designing the coin was a mighty aesthetic challenge.

Overall I think this commemorative is artistically pleasing. I had expected the reverse to be clumsy, but in hand there is a classical balance to it and does not distract from the overall impression.

  3. TWO THINGS I SEE WRONG WITH THE LINCOLN COMMEMORATIVE,IS THE MINT ALLOWING THE DESIGNERS INITALS TO BE PLACED IN THE FIELDS ON THE OBVERSE, THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN PLACED IN AN INCONSPICUOUS PLACE IN THE DESIGN.THE OTHER IS THE FACIAL BLEMISH,THAT IS SCULPTED IN THE RIGHT CHEEK OF LINCOLNS FACE ON THE COIN , THAT IS NOT NOTICABLE IN THE PICTURE BUT LOOKS TERRIBLE ON THE COIN.

  4. I will have the coins in my sweaty little palms later on today, so any comment I make will be purely from pictures I’ve seen. From what I have seen I love everything about this beautiful coin, the obverse is the nearest to the likeness of the statue at the Lincoln memorial, which almost always takes my breath away, and the reverse is a welcome stray away from the traditional American coin, Lincoln’s words are not only significant but very relevant at this time in our history. In my opinion this coin is the nicest silver coin ever produced by the US Mint since the magnificent silver eagle. Because of the differences in design I think they will provide a great investment future for collectors.

  7. Front is very Presidential and will be as strong as the Buffalo and Washington comms. Back is weak, I agree, sort of like the Jefferson Spouse Gold.

  8. The front is a very strong 4, and the back a weak 2. For a portrait it is very good.

  10. The obverse is of interest because one is looking UP at the president. Subtly this suggests Lincoln’s prominence in American history. It would be appropriate to have put more wrinkles in his 1864-65 face than the coin has: this is a general fault with contemporary Mint designs, which “youthenize” presidents.

The reverse is reminiscent of medals, and I like it for this effect. Lincoln’s words were his most valuable tools, so the quote is a good idea. The signature at the bottom is superfluous.
