The 2009 Lincoln Cent will feature four different reverse designs to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The fourth design represents Lincoln’s Presidency in Washington, DC. The reverse depicts the half completed Capitol Dome and was designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Joseph Menna. The obverse features the original Lincoln Cent design by Victor D. Brenner.

The unfinished capitol dome symbolizes the unfinished argument over states’ secession and slavery AT THE TIME. The outcome was still up in the air when he was assassinated. I think the design is apt,if sometimes too subtle for those who don’t know a lot of Civil War history.
I was worried that the details would be hard to render, but, having got my hands on some in circulation, I think the designers and sculptors did a superb job. A sleeper, if ever there was one.
Ratings:This design is inexplicable and so it doesn’t make immediate sense. Lincoln served one term as a congressman, and the important things he did, he did as president, often in spite of, rather than with, congress.
Not sure what they were thinking with this one.
Ratings:Yes, it’s historically accurate, but the image comes across as a post-nuclear ruin. Not particularly inspiring.
