2008-W American Platinum Eagle

The American Platinum Eagle has featured annually changing designs for the collectible versions of the bullion coins. The three year design serie known as The Foundations of American Democracy reached its third and final year in 2008. The 2008-W Platinum Eagle reverse design featured the judicial branch. The rendition of Lady Justice was designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Charles Vickers. The obverse of the coin featuring the Statue of Liberty was designed and sculpted by John Mercanti.

  1. This coin’s design is horrible. I have never liked the portrayal of the Statue of Liberty as it’s so “in your face”. The themes shown are decidedly better than the eagles portrayed on earlier coins, but still not great. For a coin in the $1300+ range, the U.S. Mint could do a lot better.

I compared this with the comparatively simple, but elegant, design of the bullion Silver dollar, featuring Lady Liberty astride and a beautiful American Eagle. Much nicer and certainly a better design.

Canada’s Platinum Maple Leaf is my favorite platinum coin and also features a simple, yet iconic image of the Maple Leaf, known world-wiide to represent Canada. Similarly, Australia produces the beautiful Platinum Koala. Surely the U.S. Mint can do better than the current attrocious design for the Platinum Eagle.

  2. Beautiful coin, low mintage, high investment potential. But what is justice stepping in on the reverse?
